DEFENDERS OF CHRIST
Defenders of Christ is the youth ministry of Sacred Heart Parish, dedicated to helping young people grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and live out their Catholic faith. Through faith formation, fellowship, service, and prayer, the program encourages youth to deepen their understanding of Scripture, become active members of the parish community, and develop the values needed to live as faithful disciples in today's world.
FAITH, FELLOWSHIP, GROWTH
For many years, Les and Deb Erwin played a pivotal role in guiding children through their transition from childhood to adulthood through the Parish School of Religion program at Sacred Heart. They helped prepare students to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and provided a strong foundation in the Catholic faith.
In 2015, the youth group adopted the name Defenders of Christ, and leadership passed to Jerome and Kenna Freiburger. Under their guidance, the ministry focused on deepening the youth's understanding of the Bible, encouraging active participation in the life of the Church, and helping young people live as disciples of Jesus Christ. When the diocese later approved Confirmation for seventh-grade students, the program evolved by shifting away from sacramental preparation and placing a greater emphasis on personal growth, faith development, and community building.
In 2024, after nearly a decade of dedicated leadership, Jerome and Kenna stepped down and passed leadership of the ministry to Jimena Hernandez. Under her guidance, Defenders of Christ continues its mission of supporting and inspiring the youth of Sacred Heart Parish as they grow in faith and discipleship.
