CALVARY CEMETERY
Calvary Cemetery has served the Verona Catholic community for more than a century, providing a sacred resting place for generations of parishioners and their families. Rich in history and faith, the cemetery remains a testament to the enduring legacy of our parish.
HONORING OUR PARISH
Calvary Cemetery was originally established in the 1880s. After an initial cemetery site was lost due to tax issues and later abandoned, new land was purchased and consecrated for Catholic burials. On April 9, 1888, John S. and Anna Jerrick deeded two acres of land to the parish, and on April 2, 1889, W.E. and Sallie Wright sold an additional acre. Following a special blessing and consecration, the cemetery was named Calvary Cemetery. The first recorded burial was Andrew Operavill, who died on June 11, 1889. Fr. White, pastor of Verona Catholic Church from 1972 to 1976, is the only priest buried in the cemetery. In 1975, the original abandoned section of the cemetery was reopened. From 1889 to 1981, there were 489 recorded burials, and from 1981 to 1999, there were 68 recorded burials. The Cemetery Committee continues to update burial records, plot information, and cemetery maps to preserve the history of those laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
