Calvary Cemetery

Calvary Cemetery

The cemetery is located about 1 mile east of the church grounds.

Calvary Cemetery was purchased in 1883 under the direction of Fr. Joseph Beck. Twenty acres were bought and the land was registered in Fr. Becks name. The land was mortgaged and then sold off at acution for back taxes owed by Fr. Beck. One acre of land where some burials had already taken place was eventually sold back to the church. Mr. John A Tennis, who held the mortgage on the land is buried there. Mr. Tennis murdered a man in a dual and then was in turn killed too. Because of this, the burying ground was considered desecrated and was abandoned. On April 9th, 1888 John S and Ana Jerrick deeded two acres of land to be used as a cemetery for thirty-six dollars. A year later on April 2nd, 1889 W.E and Sallie Wright sold the parish one acre of land. The church had a special blessing of consecration on the land and named in Calvary

The first recorded death is Andrew Operavill who died on June 11th, 1889.

Fr. White who was the pastor at Verona from 1972-1976 is the only priest buried in the cemetery.
