For many years, Les and Deb Erwin played a pivotal role in guiding children through their transition from childhood to adulthood, providing support through the Parish School of Religion program on Sunday mornings at Sacred Heart. They were responsible for teaching students the curriculum necessary for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. In 2015, the youth group took on the name Defenders of Christ, and leadership passed to Jerome and Kenna Freiburger. Under their guidance, the group’s mission was to deepen the youth's understanding of the Bible and help them live as disciples of Jesus Christ in today’s world. The program aimed to draw young people into active participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community, while fostering personal and spiritual growth.
However, when the diocese approved Confirmation for 7th-grade students, the structure of the program had to evolve. With this change, the youth ministry adapted by eliminating the Confirmation preparation component and shifting its focus. The new emphasis was on helping young people recognize the importance of their individuality, while also nurturing a sense of community and collective support.
In 2024, after nearly a decade of dedicated leadership, Jerome and Kenna stepped down, passing the torch to Jimena Hernandez. Under Jimena's leadership, the Defenders of Christ group embarks on a new chapter, continuing its mission to guide and support youth in their spiritual journey.
